The Reef Stalked on Hulu is an indie horror/thriller that offers a mix of suspense, survival, and shark-infested waters. With a minimalistic cast and a gripping premise, this film had its ups and downs for me.
The story centers on Nic, a character who initially struggled to capture my interest. Her lingering trauma from witnessing her sister’s death seemed to dominate her character, making it hard to connect with her at first. However, as the film progressed, Nic’s transformation became more compelling. Her bravery in overcoming her fears to save her other sister was a significant turning point that added depth to her character.
The movie is undeniably indie, with a cast of about six members, and the majority of the screen time is shared by just three characters. This intimate setup worked well to create a sense of isolation and tension.
The soundtrack had its moments, but it occasionally veered into cringe territory. Despite this, there were some enjoyable musical sequences that added to the film’s atmosphere. The acting was decent, though not outstanding, which is often the case with indie productions.
One of the highlights was the shark. It didn’t disappoint and delivered the necessary thrills and chills that one expects from a shark movie.
Overall, The Reef Stalked was an interesting watch with a mix of suspense and survival elements. While it had its flaws, it still offered a unique take on the genre.
